Laura Murray
It is easier to find guides, someone to tell you what to do, than someone to be with you in a discerning, prayerful companionship as you work it out yourself. This is what spiritual direction is.

What is Spiritual Direction?
  • Definition
Spiritual Direction is a centuries old Christian practice of listening for the Holy Spirit in the life of another. The spiritual director holds a space of quiet, listening, and attentiveness in order to notice the inner life of the directee and what God might be saying or doing. Even as the spiritual director meets with the directee, it is God who is the ultimate spiritual director. Spiritual direction can be practice one on one or in group spiritual direction.
  • A Regular Practice
Spiritual direction is a monthly or bi-monthly (every other month) practice of 50-60 minutes where you and the spiritual director meet in person or virtually. The spiritual director will likely hold spaces of quiet, prayer, and reflection in order to help you attend to your inner life.
  • Confidential
Our spiritual directors honor your story and journey and anything that comes up in spiritual direction will be kept in confidence. Confidence can be broken in cases of danger to self, harm to others, abuse or neglect of another, and in any legal mandates.
  • Different
Spiritual Direction is different than counseling or coaching in that its focus is the inner life and soul of the directee. Counseling attends to wounds, trauma, and hurts in order for a person to heal. Coaching is goal-oriented and helps one set and achieve goals.
Why Spiritual Direction?
You are not alone in your search for someone to care for your soul.
  • Care of Soul
Many Christian clergy, ministry, and non-profit leaders are especially in need of someone to tend to their souls as they care for others.
  • Discernment
There are threshold moments in our lives, and you need someone to help you navigate these decisions and be attentive to God's voice in them.
  • Stuck
Often, we get stuck in our relationship with God. We aren't sure why, but we find ourselves stuck, unable to go deeper.
  • Return to God
Spiritual wounds abound, and we don't always know where to take them. You need someone to allow safe space for your soul.
  • Soul Rest
You are weary, and you need rest. You are unsure where to find rest for your soul.
  • Re-Center
The noise around you is so loud and you need help re-centering and re-settling your soul on God.

  • Beth Hegney
    Spiritual Director
Much of my connection to God happens outside church walls—in the woods, beside water, through travel, photography, art, and honest conversation over coffee. For Beth, church is a way of being in the world alongside others, attentive to the sacred in everyday life. She believes God invites us into the ordinary shaped by curiosity, creativity, and mystery, holding joy alongside grief and moving from shame to grace.

Beth holds a Master of Theology and is pursuing a Doctor of Ministry in Spiritual Formation and Direction at Fuller Theological Seminary. She works via Zoom or from my “little house” in the Minnesota woods through her work at www.soul-renovation.com. Beth shares life with her husband, two teenagers, and her greatest teacher of faith—her grown daughter with significant special needs, who teaches without ever speaking.
